Surrealism is defined as "a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images." It gives photos a dream-like quality and are often very unusual. The surrealist movement was first started in 1924.
The Persistence of Memory- Salvador Dali
Salvador Dali was a famous Spanish artist born in 1904. His interactions with artists such as Picasso, Magritte, and Miro led him to create surrealist art. He was expelled from the surrealist movement by Spain's leader, but that did not stop him from continuing his surrealist art.
The Triumph of Surrealism- Max Ernst
Max Ernst was a German painter and sculptor born in 1891. Max Ernst was a leading advocate of irrationality in art and an originator of the surrealist movement. He started out by studying philosophy and psychiatry, but abandoned his studies for painting. Later in his life in Paris, he became a founding member of a surrealist group of artists whose work "grew out of fantasies evoked from the unconscious."
Many photographers today in the 21st century model surrealist art in their photographs. The photos have the same mood and tone to it as the paintings too, but are actual images.
